| Meet the Author
Bruce Juell has been a U.S. Navy jet pilot, management consultant, turnaround specialist, investment banker, corporate CEO, venture capitalist, father, grandfather, a very poor golfer, and an active
volunteer. He is active in a number of senior- and retirement-related organizations and was a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging, which was held in Washington DC in December 2005.
After receiving his Bachelor of Engineering and MBA degrees from the University of Southern California, he joined the Los Angeles office of McKinsey & Company, where he worked in the areas of strategic and organizational planning. He founded Builders Resources Corporation and, as a key part of the Penn Central Railroad turnaround team, he served as CEO of Great Southwest Corporation and its wholly owned subsidiary, Six Flags, Inc.
He was head of the Corporate Finance Department at Bateman Eichler, Hill Richards and held various consulting and management roles as CEO and/or president of First City Properties, Inc., Kratos Corporation, IDM Corporation and R.A. Rowan & Co. Other consulting experience included projects with the Fidelity Group in Boston and Executive Life Insurance Company.
Mr. Juell has served on the Boards of Directors of Del Webb Corporation, IDM Corporation, Great Southwest Corporation, First City Properties, Arvida Corporation, AMCAP Mutual Fund, Olson Farms, Inc., Kratos Corporation, Bateman Eichler, Hill Richards and R.A. Rowan & Co.
He has been active in a number of business and community groups, including the Young Presidents' Organization, the Chief Executives' Organization, the Urban Land Institute, the UCLA School of Architecture Advisory Council, the California Club, the USC Entrepreneurial Program Advisory Board, the City of Hope Board of Governors, the House Ear Institute Foundation Board, Little Company of Mary Foundation, the Museum of Flying Board of Directors, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute and the Advancement Board of the Emeriti Center at the University of Southern California.
He and his wife Jean live in Palos Verdes Estates, California.
The Retirement Activities Guide is one result of Mr. Juell's quest for meaningful endeavor in retirement. It is based on his experiences and contacts during his varied business career and extensive exploration into the attitudes, expectations and desires of retiring and retired colleagues and associates, as well as those of friends and neighbors.
